Abstract
Sixty five patients presented with the clinical picture of portal hypertension. They were submitted to clinical examination, haematological studies, liver function tests, liver biopsy, barium swallow, manometris studies, portal venography, and oesphagoscopy. Twenty of them were selected for surgery; splenectomy and devascularisation was done for sixteen patients having esophageal varics, and gypersplenism, and splenectomy alone was done for another four patients having hypersplenism only.
