Abstract

The knee joint is the largest and most complex joint of the human body. Its range of motion includes flexion and extention, varus and valgus, and rotatory component.( I)
The important extra-capsular structures supporting and influencing the function of this joint are the collateral ligaments and musculo-tendinous units that span the
joint.( I)
The prinicipal intra-capsular structures of importance are the medial and lateral menisci and the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments.(l)
Anatomically ACL consists of anteromedial and posterolateral bands and possibly an intennediate band .(2)
A rupture of the ACL compromises the stability of the knee in individuals who are active resulting in instability, recurrent injuries and associated intra¬articular diseases.(3,4,5,6)
Several investigators reported the incidence of meniscal tears with acute anterior cruciate ligament injuries to range from 50% to 70°,lo.(] )
The anterior cruciate ligament is commonly torn in athletes of all ages.(7) The classic history of an anterior cruciate ligament injury begins with a non contact deceleration, jumping or cutting action. Other mechanisms of injury include external forces applied to the knee.
