Abstract

Hysteroscopy is an old technique, but has attracted much attention after the marvelous advancement of optics, instrumentation, uterine distension media and energy use. Now, the use of office hysteroscopy in both gynecologic diagnosis and treatment has been a reality.
Office hysteroscopic examination is now an established step in the diagnostic work up of cases with abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, misplaced or lost intrauterine contra-ceptive device and recurrent miscarriage that can be performed safely and efficiently without anesthesia in most cases.
This study aims to assess the convenience and efficiency of hyteroscopy without anesthesia in diagnostic and operative interventions in the office setting. Patient acceptability and satisfaction with mini-hysteroscopy are evaluated.
This descriptive study was conducted in early cancer detection unit at Ain Shams University maternity hospital during the period from March 2006 to February 2007. Four hundred women, aged 17-73 years, with different gynecologic complaints participated in this study. Nilligravida represented 33.25% of all women in the study.
The most common indication was abnormal uterine bleeding which was represented by 155 patients (38.75%), while infertility was the second indication (23.5% of the patients).
In our study failure of the procedure occurred in 3 patients (0.75%), all of them had cervical stenosis denying the passage of the office hysteroscopy.
