Abstract
Compliance with the therapeutic regimen is considered the main theme in the management of patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Several variables affect the patients’ compliance. These factors include ability to access resources, knowledge and perception of patient about the disease. The aim of this work was to assess compliance of patients on hemodialysis to therapeutic regimen through the following: a) Identifying causes of non compliant to therapeutic regimen for patients on hemodialysis. b) Developing a suggested plan for non compliant hemodialysis patients. Methodology: Tools: A questionnaire sheet designed by the investigator after reviewing related literature includes: sociodemographic characteristics of the subjects, subjects past and present medical history and a scale of compliance. Setting: Dialysis Unit, Zagazig University Hospital. Sample: 100 patients under hemodialysis. Conclusion: the majority of the patients didn’t perceive their disease as a serious problem. Financial problems and ineffective management of therapeutic treatment are considered the most common barriers for non compliance to therapeutic regimen. Recommendations: Hemodialysis patients are in need of an instruction program based on studying their pattern of compliance to therapeutic regimen in order to raise their level of compliance. Encourage social agencies to support those patients who suffer from chronic illnesses.
