Abstract

Stunting is an important public health problem in developing countries because of its association during childhood with impaired growth and delayed mental development. Stunting is highly prevalent amongst children in many third world countries. It is defined as low height for age at <-2 standard deviation of the median value of the National Center for Health and Statistics and W orId Health Organization (NCHS/WHO) international growth reference. The study was conducted to fulfill the following aims: I-To study the environmental aspects of stunting among primary school children in Alexandria. 2-To determine the prevalence of stunting among children. pnmary school 3- To Investigate the environment in which the stunted child is thriving to identify the factors affecting his nutritional status. To accomplish these aims: A cross section study was done .A stratified random sample of schools were chosen, stratification was based upon district and type of school ( governmental / private) .Random seven schools were chosen from the seven educational districts in Alexandria. Random five classes were chosen from every school ( from grade one to grade five).A total of 1185 school students were selected from the seven educational districts. Data collected from the studying sample using a pre-coded pilot tested questionnaire .The questionnaire included name, sex, date of birth , year of schooling, final grades of mid-year examination and anthropometric measures including height and weight. A total of 38 children were found (0 be stunted. A total of 38 nonnal height children were taken as control. Environmental study was done to those children at their homes. The parents of children were interviewed to collect the relevant infonnation using a pre-designed questionnaire to obtain the following .iJlfonnation : . Socioeconomic: education of the parents, job of the father, family size, crowding index and environmental sanitations. . Medical history of the child. . 24 -hours dietary recall . . Food habits and food consumption. . Mid-upper arm circumference was taken. Data were subjected for statistical analysis using SPSS computer program .
