Abstract

HAV infection continues to be a major public health problem as it represents one of the most common childhood viral infections. The disease is markedly age dependent, young children often pass asymptomatic infection and the severity of symptoms increases with age. The disease is highly influenced by improvement of personal hygiene and socioeconomic factors especially in developed countries. As a consequence, the world is facing a much more serious situation as we approach to the twenty first-century because the number of susceptible adults increases by time. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of antibodies to HAV among school children attending School Health Insurance Hospital in Alexandria. A cross sectional study was conducted among students attending Sporting School Health Insurance Hospital in Alexandria during a time period of six months (from 1/4/2000 to 1/10/2000), it included 360 children aged 6 to 15 years. All study population was submitted to the following: 1- Filling of pre-designed interview questionnaire. 2- Clinical examination. 3- Sera collection for detection of anti-HAV IGG using ELISA technique.
