Abstract

A very little information is available on blood evels of thyroid hormones in patients of bilharzial lL1festation associated with goi ter. In the present at udy we have ass~ssed the thyroid atatus of 123 subjects classified as: i. Control group H. Simple nodular goi t er group (N=47) . (N=44 ) (N=23) (N= 9) iii. Toxic goi ter group iv. Malignant goiter group Each group was further classified to subjects with subjects vdthout bilharziasis. The free of bilhariasis werB 30, 30, 13 and 9 for sil:1ple nodu1ar goiter, toxic goiter and malignant loiter groups, respectively. (I’he corresponding numbers with bilharziasis for the same groups were 17, 14, 10 .and 0, respectively. All groups were matched accorcing socioeconomic class and level of education. The of bilharziasis was based on past history, olinical examination and laboratory investigations, blood I8i11ples were oollected from all subjects between 9.0 and and separated within an hour, thQ separated stored at -20°C until assayed for the follow hormonal and serological assays: 1. . Biochemical assa.zs: This involved the determination of total protein IDd albumin by oolorimeteric methods. Serum globulin II1d albuminglobulin (A/G) ratio were caloulated from the loova two paramet ers . /.
