Abstract Absenteeism and turnover of hospital nurses are undesirable behaviors and continual problems faced by nursing administrators and other hospital management personnel. Nurses’ absenteeism and turnover result in decreased staffing, increased patient load, dteration in staffing patterns, decreased production hours, increased management cost, decreased employee morale, and decreased quality of patient care. The present study aimed at quantifying the extent of absenteeism among nurses in Alexandria governmental hospitals, determining the real causes of absenteeism, identifying the determinants of absenteeism including socio-demographic and organizational factors, determining the relationship between absenteeism and the different dimensions of job satisfaction, and determining the trend in turnover. The study was conducted in three hospitals in Alexandria, namely, Karmouz Hospital (representing the Health Insurance organization) , AI-Mabara Hospital (representing the Curative Care ~~nization), and Ras El-Teen Hospital (representing the Ministry of Health and Population) . The absenteeism study w~s based on all nurses employed at the study hospitals during the year 1994 except those on long term leave, and the newly appointed (less than 6 months). The study amounted to 128 nurses in Karmouz, 98 in AI-Mabara, and 115 in Ras El-Teen Hospital. The turnover study was based on all nurses ~o were employed at the study hospital yearly, during each of ~n years 1985 through 1994, including those on long term leave. Two techniques were used to collect data, namely, record review, and structured interview. The 1994 personnel register of hospital nurses was reviewed to obtain for each nurse, data .!-;)o. bout duration and type (whether sickness, deducted, or ,eeasional) of each absence episode. To compute the turnover ates, the total number of nurses employed and the number of esignations during each of the ten study years were obtained rom the hospital termination register. All nurses were contacted to participate in an interview for ~ollection of data related to reasons and determinants of labsenteeism. |
