Abstract

Experiments have been performed to investigate the performance of
the thermosyphon, (wickless heat pipe), by using a binary as a
working fluid such as water-methanol or water-acetone.
The effect of different parameters such as the binary mixture
content, the inner heat-pipe diameter and the evaporator surface
temperature have been studied. The experiments are carried for
three different diameters ranging from 11 mm to 26 mm, binary
mixture content ranging from 25% to 75% and the evaporator
surface temperature up to 180°C.
It was found from the present study that for both binary mixture
content water-methanol and water-acetone with percentage 25% for
both methanol and acetone, the range of the operating temperature
were extended to be higher than using pure water as a working fluid,
the critical flooding limits were extended to higher range and also it
is observed that increased heat-transfer rates at lower ranges of
operating temperature from 35°C to 60 ”C.
It was also found that the heat transfer rate increases as the
diameter of the thermosyphon heat pipe increases.
According to the experimental results of the present work
concerning the binary fluids as working fluids the major conclusions
may be drawn, the ranges of the operating temperature and the
critical flooding limit were extended to higher values than that
thermosyphons using pure water, also the heat-transfer rates will
increase in lower ranges of the operating temperatures
