Abstract

CT with 3D reconstruction has the unique ability to evaluate both the effects of surrounding mediastinal abnormalities on the esophagus and the effects of esophageal abnormalities on the adjacent mediastinum.
Multislice CT examination can detect the presence of pleuroparenchymal injury (pneumothorax, pleural effusion and subcutaneous emphysema) as well as findings suggestive of oesophageal perforation: peri-oesophageal air, peri-oesophageal fluid, oesophageal wall thickening, oesophageal wall laceration with abnormal course of the nasogastric tube and extraluminal extravasation of oral contrast material. Patients with post-intubation complications, Multislice CT can detect the presence of minimal or gross peri-oesophageal fluid collection. It can also detect foreign body ingestion .
