Abstract Currently, a variety of thoracic surgical procedures, such as lobectomy, pneumonectomy, esophago-gastrectomy, pleural decortication, and bronchopulmonary lavage are commonly performed. Video-assisted thoracoscopy gained wide popularity for various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Other procedures that make use of thoracic anesthetic techniques include minimally invasive cardiac surgery, descending aortic aneurysm repair, minimally invasive spine surgery, and thoracic sympathectomy. The performance of the above mentioned procedures usually requires one lung anesthesia. One lung anesthesia is a technique in which one lung is separated from the other in ventilation during surgery. The practice of thoracic anesthesia requires a clear understanding of techniques of lung separation and the technical skills necessary to apply such technique. |
