Abstract

H.pylori organisms are spiral, Gram-negative bacteria that demonstrate bluntly rounded biopsy specimens.
H. pylori is the main cause of chronic gastritis, and results in various disease outcomes including peptic ulceration, which is the main cause for upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage and gastric adencarcinoma. It seems that this bacterium is also causally related to low-grade B-cell lymphoma of gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid-tissue (MALT_lymphoma). Moreover H pylori infection has been established as a risk factor for the development of both diffuse and intestinal type of gastric cancer. The World Health Organization has classified the bacterium H. pylori as a class 1 carcinoma.
The present study aimed at evaluation of clinical usefulness of urine-based rapid test and salivary antibodies in diagnosis of H. pylori infection. It also aimed at assessment of the diagnostic yield of Loifson flagellar staining method.
One hundred and two patients (86 males and 16 females), who underwent endoscopy because of clinical symptoms attributable to upper gastrointestinal tract, in the Medical Research Institute during the period from April to October 2003, were enrolled in the present study.
