Abstract

This study was to validate the nutritive quality of sweet lupins as a possible plant protein source to be used in broiler chick rations. The G.E, A.M.En T.M.E and T.M.En of sweet lupins were 4.240, 2.029, 2.211, 2.767 and 2.566/gm (air dry matter), respectively. Apparent and true protein digestibility recorded78.42% and 92.70%, respectively. Digestion coefficients percentage of organic matter lied between 80.22 and 77.36% for birds receiving diets contained 25 and 100% sweet lupins protein, respectively. This study showed that, the best level used in starter/ broiler diets is 50% of sweet lupins protein (about 17.4%)or up to 25% sweet lupins protein (about 7%) through the finisher period. The carcass characteristics or meat quality were similar amog broiler chicks which received different experimental diets. All experimental diets showed good nitrogen balance value especially for diet with 25% sweet lupins protein. Feed efficiency indicated that the highest value recorded for chicks receiving diet containing 50% sweet lupins protein feed efficiency through the whole period (0-7 weeks) were (0.444, 0.458, 0.458, 0.444 and 0.434 gm gain/ gm feed) for groups fed on control diet, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% sweet lupins protein, respectively. The mortality rate during all periods of growth experiment was zero in all group treatments.
