Abstract The present thesis deals with the use of shape memory alloys (SMA) in controlling the vibrations of structures subjected to earthquakes. The operating conditions including temperature changes, loading frequencies as well as maximum strain amplitudes are introduced to the most popular mathematical model of the literature to actually describe the behavior of different structures provided with SMAs as damping devices for seismic isolation and energy dissipation purposes. The thesis propose the use of SMAs in mitigating and even preventing the pounding effects of multistory buildings and bridges |
