Abstract

This work is an investigation of the thermophilic bacteria of representative Egyptian soils with a view to their occurrence, identiffication, physiological and biochemical activities. The temperature of incubation of the counting plates and the growth of the isolated bacteria is 55 c. The thermophilic bacteria occurs in numbers of x10 3 with a maximum of 10 x 10 3. No soil is found lacking of the thermophils. The thermophilic isolated bacteria are in all of the 213 isolates. They are purified and identified using the keys of Wolf and Barker and consulting the keys of Bergey. All the isolates are found belonging to the genus bacillus. The physiological studies show that 133 isolates out of 213, need components found in yeast extract in order to be able to grow at 55 c. Of the 213 thermophilic isolates, 212 are facultative and one only is obligate using the complex Bunt and Revira (BR) medium. The amylolytic activity of the 213 isolates is investigated. Specific discussions of results are given. Results obtained imply the probability of finding some application of the precipitated thermophilic enzyme in canning industry.
