Abstract

The objective of this investigation is to study:-
I- The response of certain sugar cane varieties to different light duration treatments as affecting flowering process and pollen viability as well as seed viability of these varieties.
II- Synchronize the flowering of some sugar cane varieties to carry out the hybridizotion of certain varieties, which exhibit desirable agricultural and juice quality traits, for this purpose, a sets of pot experiments as well as some laboratory tests were carried out at Hawamdia Sugar Cane Research Station (HSCRS) at Giza Governarate. HSCRS is located at 30 .2 latitude north, 15 kilometers south the city of Giza.
Results of this study could be summarized as follows:
Light Duration treatments:
Two different sets of photoperiod treatments were carried out to investigate the effect of day length, time of photoperiod application on flowering performance of various sugar cane genotypes. Day length (length of day light period) was altered controlled for growing sugar cane plants in special photoperiod chambers or dark rooms (controlling day light length).
All sugar cane varieties (genotypes) used in this study were planted in clay pots 40 cm diameter and 46 cm height. Pots were filled with the prepared soil 3:1 mixture of clay and sand up to 1st upper inch. Four seed cuttings of single bud each were planted in each pot and left to grow up to the age of 11 months under natural field conditions.
