Abstract In this thesis an investigation of the performance characteristics for both synchronous generator and induction generator, driven by wind turbine, have been carried out. the study of operation is conducted with four configuration systems :1-wound field synchronous generator connected to gird 2-wound-field synchronous generator used as autonomous, stand alone system.3-cage-type induction generator connected to gird.4-cage-type induction generator used as stand-alone system.the performance characteristics of synchronous generator driven by wind turbine and connected to gird are studied. the field current control is used to optimize the reactive power and consequently optimize the active power, where the variation in the field current increases the operating range of the synchronous machine. also the maximum power is obtained through awide range of wind velocity.the operation with variable field current is better than that obtained with constsnt field current, where the synchronous generator has a higher efficiency and becomes stable all over the range of operation.the wind velocity of the site is an important factor in the determination of the suitable radius for wind turbine. the same output power for the same generator can be obtained from three turbines with different rotor blade radii at different range of wind velocities.the performance characteristics of outonomous or stand-alone synchronous generator driven by a wind turbine are studied. variable-speed wind turbine is used to extract maximum power from the system.the performance is studied for three cases:- constant power operation through the operating range for certain load resistance.- maximum power operation using control resistance connected in parallel with load resistance.- constant voltage and constant frequency operation, where the field current control is used to adjust the terminal voltage and control resistance is used to adjust the output frequency. |
