Abstract

In this experimental study we tried to investigate the effect of distraction and contraction forces applied to immature coronal suture on the morphology of craniomaxillofacial skeleton. To achieve this goal we have used fifteen growing rabbits divided into three equal groups. The first group is control group where micro-screws inserted across the coronal suture to estimate normal growth rate. The second group is distraction group where microdistractor used to apply gradual separation forces across immature coronal suture. The third group is contraction group where the same microdistractor used to apply gradual contraction forces across immature suture. Six weeks after operation all animals sacrificed and subjected to clinical, radiographic as well as histologic classification. The results of linear and angular measurements of the three groups collected tabulated and statistically analyzed. Evaluation of distraction group revealed wide spread effect of coronal suture distraction on maxillofacial skeleton with loss of symmetry and dental midline deviation. In contraction group, there was localized effect of contraction forces among bones involved in contraction device.
