The study was carried out along different parameters. The first included a-prospective study for reported ataletic injuries during the academic year 1983 - 1984 among athletic students of Helwan University. ’I’he second one was retrospective study for previous injuries among athletic students in games they played. The data in this study was collected by 3 questionnaires. The first one included personal data, data about the present injury, data about the previous injuries and data about meciical care and follov1 up. The second questionnaire was prepared for physicians working in Physical Education Faculties’ Clinics and the third questionnaire was prepared for the staff memhers of some departments of Faculty of Physical Education in’ Alexandria, to collect data about srimming pool, gymnasium and playing fields. The review of literature revealed the importance of sport in our life and it,s historic review, magnitude of the problem, classification and types of sports in juries in twelve games, ecology of sports injuries, the prevention of sports injuries and the role of sports physician. The results revealed that the prospective study included ~ 381 cases among athletffiof the age group 18 - 28 years. About two thirds of cases were males while one third was females. Lateral ankle sprain shared in almost all games as common sports injuries. Other injuries were to the ~nee, leg, face and other areas of the body. The majority of students didnot use protective equipments, . while majority of them also performed active warming up fur 5 - 10 minutes. The majority of students were not exposed to pre-playing medical examination. Only boxers and wrestlers who were exposed to it, for chest and heart examination only. ~inority of students felt fatigue before activity due to mul tiple causes. About 43.04 of students were trained tv~ice per week. 37.53 were trained for 90 minutes, only 12.36 were trained in no fixed time. Only 3. 4 1 5~ of students had a complete training plan and DO.58 had no difficulties during training. About 13.39 of injured students were immunized against tetanus but passively. Only 3.41 were exposed to complete annual medical examination. The present study led to the conclusion that medical supervision was nearly completely lacking and the role of team or sports physician was unknown. Also, there were complete absence .of recording. Results justified the recommendations in two lines; a short-term as well as long term plans with the hope that a modern well organized sports medicine centres are constructed in Faculties of Physical Education, centrali zed in our populated governorates and sports physician would take his role.
