Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of algipore parti-cles as a natural bone substitute for the repair of a critical size defect in the upper extremity of rabbit tibia.
Algipore is a porous material obtained from calcifying marine red algae after hydrothermal transformation of the calcium carbonate into flouroh-ydroxyapatite that enhance the healing of osseous defect in the rabbit tib-ia.
The use of this material because of its natural origin, chemically similar to the bone, presenting good crystalline quality, physiological stability, and the maintenance of the morphological characteristics of the initial m-aterial.
Twelve healthy adult male New Zealand rabbits were used in this study . The surgery was done under general anesthesia through intra muscular injection.
Two defects were performed in right and left sides of each animal. The d-imension of the defect was 0.5 x 0.5 x 1 cm.The tested material fills the defect in the right side while the left side left empty.
Immediate anteroposterior x-ray view was performed for the twelve rabb-its after surgery.
