Abstract A numerical and experimental study is carried out to investigate the transient response of a modified latent heat storage system. The proposed system is composed of phase change material (PCM) packed in the space between flow channels. Signal and multi pass flow configuration are investigated. Also, the theoretical model is extended to predict the enhancement in the storage systems using externally finned channels units. Preliminary modeling for a simple geometry containing PCM is carried out either considering the natural convection or the effective thermal conductivity. The natural convection model based on the solution the vorticity and energy equations of the PCM via a finite difference technique with Alternating Direction Implicit methods (ADI). The conduction model is adopted based on an effective thermal conductivity (Keff) of the melted zone of the PCM. The results of the natural convection model are utilized in a parametric study to estimate Keff and new correlation is obtained. The modified conduction model includes this correlation is used to predict the performance of enhanced storage systems enclosed externally finned flow channels with different configurations. |
