Abstract

This study was carried out on 2500 attendants to whom the intraocular pressure was measured in both eyes. All of the attendants’ intraocular nressure was measured by the indentation method using the Schiot7 tonometer and the last 500 attendants were measured by both indentation and annlanation tonometers. In the present study we dealt with every patient as follows: carefull history taking carefull clinical examination, both local and general and measuring of the intraocular pressure of both eyes. A specially designed questionaire was used in the study to fulfil these points. J The results of the study can be summari7ed in the following points: 1- The mean intraocular nressure is increasing with age in both sexes and eyes by both methods. This increase is highly significant from the statistical noint of view. 2- Sex as a factor is not affecting the intraocular Dressure in the present study as the difference in readings was found to be non significant. 3- Smoking also was found to have no significant effect on the intraocular pressure. 4- The past history of diabetes, hYDertension both or neither was found to have a statistically significant effect on the intraocular pressure. 5- Both height and weight was found to have no significant effect on the intraocular pressure. 6- Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure was found to have a highly significant effect on the intraocular pressure. 7- The visual acuity was found to have a very , high significant effect on the intraocular pressure. These factors yield. these results when treated seDarately. . . On applying a multiple linear regression analysis of the intraocular pressure’~affecting factors, it was found that visual acuity, systolie blood pressure, smoking, age and sex are the factors that constitute I8.3~ of the whole factors that affect the intraocular Dressure and that these factors have collectively a si~nificant effect on the intraocular pressure from the statistical Doint of view~ In the present study, it was found that the specificity, sensitivity and reliability of the Schiotz tonometer in relation to the applanation method is very high and that there were only 1.4 fal~e nositive readings and 4.5f81se negative ones which mean that the Schiotz method is still the first method of screening of the intraocular pre ssure in glaucoma surveys.
