Abstract

The postpartum period a critical transitional time for a woman, newborn and family, on a physiological, emotional and social level. Nonetheless, in both developing and developed countries, women’s needs during this period and those of their newborns have been too eclipsed by attention given to pregnancy and birth. Such an eclipse ignores the fact that the majority of maternal deaths and disabilities occur during the postpartum period. (Franzblau, N., & Witt, K., 2003). While learning how to deal with all the changes and adjustments required in becoming a new mother. The postpartum period also involves the parents learning how to care for their newborn and learning how to function as a changed family unit. (Prendiville W, etal, 2003). The job of the postpartum nurse is to help the new mother regain her I pre-pregnant state without complications and to provide a solid knowledge base of care for the new mother and infant. The desired outcome is that the mother feels confident about taking care of herself and her infant and be ; prepared to resume to normal role in the community. To achieve this, the I nurse guides the new mother through the predictable physiologic, emotional, and social changes that occur after a pregnancy and helps women to develop coping strategies (Yvette Collymore, 2004). Thus, the aim of this study is divided into two folds; the first fold was to examine the effect of health teaching protocol on primipara who attended at Assiut University Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and gynecology for delivery, either the high or low risk women against who did not receive it.
