Abstract

The aim of this study was two folds: (1) To maKe a measurement of the prevalence by the of psychological test in yse apparently healthy school pupils enrolled schools dyring one academic year. The study included a multista.ge strat if ied by of sample of pupils of both sexes from the first and second random year of public secondary schools at different tional zones in Alexandria governorate. from each educational zone a boys school school were chosen at random. from each selected a class from the first year, a class from section and another from the art section of the educa­ and a girls school science the second year were chosen randomly. The present study was carried out on a total number of 36 classes including 1350 pupils of both sexes. Their ages ranged between 14-19 years. The standardized arabic translation of Taylor’s test was used as a screening test to assess the anxiety level amo n 9 pup i 1 s . A questionnaire was designed to identify the following: a) Personal characteristics of the pupils e.g. age, sex, birth order, number and type of s ibl ings, number of friends and hobbies. b) Family history and socioeconomic conditions covering parental interrelations, consanguinity, 1 iv ing condi­ tions, occupation and education of parents, crowding index as we 11 as previous psychiatric problems. c) ry1ed ical history of important previous organic diseases, history of previous psychiatric troubles as we 11 as accidents and or deform it ies. In addition, scholastic achievement of the pupils was obtained from school records. Finally, a program schedule to alleviate anxiety was carried out on a sample of highly anxious (severe and very se’...ere levels of anxiety) pupils the enrolled in first year of secondary schools. Only 50 of them were involved in the and the remaining 50/. program were considered as control. The Taylor test was done once to assess the more level of anxiety of pupils after program implementat ion and comparison with control pupils to detec1: any change in their anxiety level. The present study included the following:­ I. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:­ 1). The age of pupils was statistically significant. 2). The proved to be significant in also sex was relation to anxie1:y. 3). A significant relation was found regarding first and late birth order and anxiety level. 4) . The number of friends in r”ela1:ion 1:0 anxiety level was statistically significant. \ 5). The presence of previous psychiatric a illness had statistical significance in relation to anxiety level. 6) . As regards masturbation and anxiety level a significant relation found in males; was insignificant relation in females. 7). As regards hobbies and anxiety insignificant relation found in both was females. 8). Insignificant relation was found regarding and previous history of organic diseases level. 11. FAMILY FEATURES AND SOCIOECONOMIC A). Parental features:­ I . Insignificant relation was found as regards age and anxiety level of the pupils. 2. A significant relation was found regarding and occupation of pupils’ fathers. B). Maternal features:­ 1. A significant relation was ~ound regarding age. 2. Also their education and occL~pat ion significant relation with anxiety level. C). Brothers and sisters:­ 1. A significant relation was observed regarding family coherence, parental relations, crowding index, history of psychiatric diseases in relation to anxiety level of pupils. 2. Insignificant relation as regards consanguinity and anxiety level of pupils. 111. SCHOLASTIC FEATURE 1. Relations with teacher and with colleagues was proved to have a significant relation. ’2. Scholastic achievement and history of failure were statistically significant in relation to anxiety level of pupils. 3. A significant relation was observed in pupils included in the program while insignificant relation was , found among controls who were not involved in the program. The recommendation of this study is the application and impleff~ntation of a school gu idarlce program to alleviate high anxiety level among pupils enrolled in the different educational zones of Alexandria governorate. ^
