Abstract

Utilization of oral health care has long been used as an indicator of oral health related behaviour. Mothers form a precious and sensitive segment of the society. During pregnancy they are exposed to many health problems, including. affections of the gingiva and teeth as a result of negligence of proper oral hygiene practice and gingival changes secondary to hormonal changes. Bad oral hygiene leads to bacterial plaque which is the primary cause of gingivitis. . I Pregnancy does not cause gingival disease, but it aggravates the response to bacterial plaque and creates severe gingival changes. Elemination of gingival inflammation and establishment of effective oral hygiene regim at the. onset of pregnancy can lead to little or no gingival ~ dise(1se throughout pregnancy. Tlms, there is a pressing need to identify the factors that foster utilization of dental services, so that intervention strategies for increasing utilization and for better health status can be developed. The purpose of this study is to identify oral condition, treatment need, extent of utilization of dental clinic~ by pregnant women and the factors that influence such utilization. The study was conducted in six randomly selected MCH centers in Alexandria. The study population was chosen using the systematic sample technique and amounted to 402 pregnant women. Data were collected from many. sources, the antenatal record to collect data regarding, personal, sociodemographic data, previous systemic disease and obstetric history. Dental eard to identify oral and dental condition as well as treatment needs. An interview with the . I pregnant women to investigate oral hygiene practice, oral health knowledge, orodental satisfaction and history of previous care. During last weeks of pregnancy, number of visits done during antenatal care period, complaints against dental services in MCH centers and coverage of treatment provided was obtained.
