المستخلص ABSTRACT OP TIIB STUDY l:nt:roduct:ion : The philosophy of basic education as an educational system is based on preparing pupils -to be good and positive citizens and to be able to participate in developing their society. So, basic education aims at providing pupils with knowledge, attitudes and professional skills they need in their environment. Mathematics has an important part in studying and developing other subjects. It is very useful for the individual in his private, social and economic life. So the syllabi of basic education should be presented in such a way as to help pupils develop their personalities,styles of thinking and group spirit. Problem of the study : The problem of this study consists in answering the following questions : 1- What are the criteria of defining the components of mathematics syllabi in the preparatory staqe of basic education? 2- To what extent do the present syllabi achieve these criteria? 3- What is the form of the suggested. syllabus in Matheaatics for the three years in the prep stage? ------------------------------’--’,// 4- What is the effectiveness of teaching a unit of the suggested syllabus? Procedure. of the study I -~-------------------~- First: Defining the criteria of establishing and developing the syllabi of Math. in the prep stage through: 1- Surveying the background of basic education, the nature of the Egyptian society and its problems, characteristics of the pupils in that stage,the nature of Mathematics and its part in life and the trends of developing syllabi of Mathematics in Egypt since 1970. 2- SUbmitting the criteria to a jury. Second : Evaluating the present syllabi of Math in the prep stage through : 1- Applying the criteria to the objectives and the content 2- Applying a questionnaire intended to recognizing the state of the Mathematics syllabi on a sample of 17 inspectors and 103 teachers of Math. 3- Applying an observation checklist on 42 teachers of Math to evaluate their perforaance. Third : Designing the suggested syllabus for developing MatheJU.tics in the prep stage through : 1- The criteria .antioned p~iously. 2-Reviewing llatheaatics progra_es in sc.e other countries 3- The results of evaluating the present Bystea of llatheaatlcs syllabi. 4- The results of analysiDg books of science and the pract:ical fields in the 1*’8p8t:age. ------- .~-----------~------ __ /L_/ Fourth·: ·Measuring the effectiveness -of the suggested syllabus through : 1- Preparing a unit from it and building up its subjects in the student book. 2- Preparing a teacher’s manual for teaching the unit. 3- Preparing an achievement test based on the unit to measure student’s competency. 4- SUbmitting the unit, the manual and the achievement test to a jury. 5- Choosing the study sampl:efrom 1st year preparatory school pupils eN. 70) and applying a pre-test to them. 6- Teaching the unit to the study sample. 7- Applying the post test. a- Analyzing the data and stating the results.
