Abstract AB.$TRACT This study investigates” Power Language.” More specifically .ir IS a gender based study of PI as represented in selected segmetw; of the Egyptian society .Thc study investigates how ”Power” is encoded in speech, a question of central concern to sociolinguistics. In different cornmunities, people speak differently. These differences reflect significantly different cultural values. So the present study gives an account of the Egyptian cultural values reflected in speech by studying request· and commands as two speech acts reflecting power because the right to request or command someone is often derived from ”Power”. Three instruments are used in the study: a role play task in Arabic, recorded conversations of daily natural speech and observations . The results of the study are generally consistent with the results and findings of previous research in sex differences and power language, in terms of : (1) gender differences in requesting and commanding behaviour, (2) cultural values revealed in the requests and commands given by the subjects in their responses. (3) female speech as more polite than male speech and classified as powertess speech . (4) requests and commands used more by speakers who have power and who arc of higher status than the addressees . |
