Abstract

A swimming pool is a body of water of limited size contained in a holding structure. The water generally is chlorinated potable water. The number of swimming pools in many countries has multiplied several times. Inspite of the measures usually taken to keep swimming pools in good hygienic condition, they might be polluted through several sources. Bathers are the main general source of pollution, a wide variety of substances can be transmitted to pool water from their bodies. As the demand for swimming and bathing facilities has recently increased and extended beyond the supervision, heavy loads of bathers are frequent and the water may become excessively polluted unless suitable precautions are taken to maintain the quality at a reasonable standard. The study aimed at assessing the environmental health aspects of some of Alexandria swimming pools. Seventeen pools located at clubs, universities, schools, and hotels have been selected and studied by evaluating: the sanitary engineering conditions; personal, socioeconomic, and health problems data of the users, and swimming pools water quality characterizations.
