In the name of Allah most compassionate most merciful’ .AU thanks for Allah the good of aU the worlds who created man, taught him speech and gave
him preference to many of His creatures. All peace be upon His good mannered messenger
whom he sent with bright light and brilliant faith.Now this is a study in the poetry of Mahmoud Sami EL Baroudy who took part in the arena of
political life as an officer, a minister and prime minister and who also the arena of literature
as poet , a writer and composer .
There is a semi unanimity among the critics and scholars that he is considered the pioneer and
resurrector of modern Arab poetry. Hence many scholars made many studies about him.most important of which are :-
1-A study of his life and poetry by Dr Naffousa Zakarya Said.
2-A study about EL baroudy as the pioneer of the modern Arab poetry by Dr Shawki Dayf.
3-A study about EL baroudy as the renaissance poet by Dr Ali EL Hdidi .
4-A study about EL Baroudy as one of the Arab intellectual genius by Dr Amr EL Dysoki .
In addition to same researches written about him in books which date the beginning of our
modern poetry and also in addition to some scientific messages.
But in spite of the numerous studies which deal with EL Baroudy , The poetic language in his
poetry is not involved in separate studies which handle the dimensions, draw the frames,
renew the ends and dive into the artistic texture and building to register the phenomena and the
features and so on .
We should not deduct from my speech about the previous studies that I describe them as
deficient and defective but all I wanted is to pave the way and to show that the poetic diction in
his poetry has been far from any separate studies, hence comes my study which included an
introduction, preface, two chapters and an index.
The preface entitled EL ~ Baroudy in lines i.e it is almost a short lighting for the life of the
man’s life and his bibliography or it is almost a window through which we look at his birth, his
lineage, his education and his culture in addition to his works and his formal position and his
death in 1904 . .
The first chapter is divided into two sections:
Th first section entitled ”The concept of poetry ”exhibits the ancient Arab concept including
the sayings of some critics and poet. Then I illuminated the concept of poetry with some
western philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle then I moved to clarify the EL Baroudy’ s
concept of poetry and I divided it into, what it is , its importance and the means and concluded
that EL Baroudy was of a renewing thought in the concept of poetry.
I specialized the second section to the poetic diction with a study of vocabulary and structure
in which I handle contemplation and heritage effect and clarified to what extent the poet needs
the heritage to weave from it a new material because the poet must depend on an inherited
cultural store .
. Then I handled the vocabulary of the poetic diction and found that the poet depends on severa
tributaries because sometimes he is effected by the Holy Quran and sometimes by the
honorable Hadith , other times by the previous poet, fourth by nature and fifth by arabicised
words such as Persian and Turkish words. After that I moved to some style phenomena in
poetry of the poet such as repetition, extaposition , interposition and image expression and I
did so with poetic evidence.
The second chapter fell into three sections.1- The first section entitled” A text dialogue as a study in EL Baroudy’s oppositions and
showed the difference between opposition and others. After that] exposed a study of EL
Baroudy’s opposition such as the opposition of admiration, of challenge, help and others.
Then I handle the opposition with criticism and analysis. r handled also EL Baroudy’s
opposition to Abi Fera in his poem ”I find you tearless ”exposing both poems with criticism
and analysis concluding the section with a general assessment of EL Baroudy’s opposition.
The second section entitled ”The oral speech and the means of poetic inculcation ”in which I
handled in its beginning the role of speech ’oration} in poetry then I exposed the means of
poetic inculcation which include :-
A - interrogation 13- Command and prohibition
C - calling out.
The third section entitled n The expression of emotion in EL Baroudys poetry ”. In its
beginning I handled the concept of emotion and what it means in poetry and found that it is
essential in the literary work.
Then I exposed the accusations directed to classic poetry. Then I moved to EL Baroudy’s way
of expressing emotion exposing at the same time some poetic purposes which stress the
emotion of knighthood.
At last I ended the research with a conclusion which includes the results, I mentioned the
sources I used and the references together with the index.
Now I pray Allah to impart LIS the right path.
