Abstract

Diabetic nephropathy is the most common cause of end stage renal disease (ESRD) in developed countries and accounts for 30% of cases.About 20-30% of people with type I and type 11 of diabetes develop nephropathy and the incidence increases with the duration of disease.TGF-P is a cytokine that plays an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of diabetic nephropathy. The aim of the present study is to assess the level of urinary transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-P 1)in type I diabetic patients to show its role in progression of diabetic nephropathy at different stages of the disease. The present study included 45 insulin dependent diabetic patients(group 11) which divided into three subgroups according to the level of microalbumin in urine: 15 patients with normoalbuminuric stage (GI1 a),15 patients with microalbuminuric stage (GI1 b), 15 patients with macroalbuminuric stage (GI1 c), they were compared to 10 healthy volunteers (group I) who represented the normal control group.
