Abstract

The Gulf of Suez is considered as the most productive area in the Egyptian red Sea sector The annual catch is about 20000 ton -Three different fishing methods are used in the Gulf of Suez namely, trawl, purse-seine and long and hand line. There are other fishing method includes colling, gill netting, trammel nets, beach seining cast net . . .etc. -The catch of the artisanal fishery in the Gulf of Suez during the fishing seasons from 1979/80 to 1997/98, fluctuated between a maximum value of 21 47 ton during the fishing season 1989/90 and a minimum value of 193 64 in during the fishing season l991/92with a mean value of 485 10 ton The annual percentage of grouper catch to the total artisanal catch through the fishing seasons from 1979/80 to 1997/98 varied between 41 43% and 9 24% with a mean value of26 61% -The fishing effort expressed as the number of fishing boats operated in the 3ulf of Suez increased from 93 boat during the fishing season 1979/80 to 176 oat during the fishing season 199 5/96 -The catch per unit of fishing effort expressed as the catch per fishing boats for cotal artisanal catch varied between 7 219 tonfboat during the fishing season 979/80 and 0 217 tonlboat during the fishing season 1995/96.
