Abstract

Unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia is a common finding in neonatal period. High levels of unconjugated bilirubin have been shown to have a direct toxic effect on neural and extraneural tissues and to impair their functions.The aim of this work w a s t o evaluate the renal function in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia The study was conducted at. Newborn Unit of Tanta University Hospital on 90 fullterm newborn with gestaional ages from 38 to 42 weeks during their first 10 days age. They were divided into three groups: forty jaundiced with serum bilirubin levels between 12.2 mg/dl and 19.2 mg/dl served as group I, thirty jaundiced with serum bilirubin levels between 20.5 mg/dl and 34.2mgldl served as group 11 and twenty not visibly jaundiced with serum bilirubin levels below 1 Omg/dl served as control.
