Abstract

Hypertension and atherosclerosis are at the root of such a dramatic increase in the morbidity and mortality. Both hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, which frequently occur together are independent risk factors for cardiovascular events, induce vascular damage, and affect coronary flow by impairing endothelium-mediated vasodilatation. The interaction between high blood pressure and atherosclerosis was suspected to be . owing to the lack of endothelial nitric oxide. Nitric oxide (NO) is produced in the endothelial cells in response to bradykinin, acetylcholine, or shear stress.Diminished NO bioavailability is associated to increased peripheral resistance and elevation of blood pressure. Also, is associated with impaired endothelium-dependei~t relaxation of blood vessels, which considered as the earliest step in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. This work was carried out to investigate the role of AT1 blocker (losartan-K).3hydroxy-3inethyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase inhibitor (Atorvastatin-Ca), and their combination on nitric oxide level measured as its stable end products (nitrate and nitrite).lipid profile, and atheromatous changes on cholesterol-fed rabbits.
