Abstract

The thesis consists of 5 chapters:
Chapter 1 includes a literature survey on the electrochemical and corrosion behaviour of nickel in acid media. Special attention was paid to the organic and inorganic additives as well as the different techniques used.
Chapter 2 includes the experimental details of this thesis which deals with the preparation of electrode for potential measurements (Ni 201 alloy), preparation. of electrolytes (these were solutions of four carboxylic acids), description of the techniques and apparatus used for such techniques (potentiodynamic, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM», and finally preparation for potential measurements. Also in this part, the preparation
of inorganic anion solutions used in this investigation.
Chapter 3 deals with the electrochemical and corrosion behaviour of Ni 20 I alloy in I, 5 and 10% acetic, oxalic, tartaric and citric acid solutions using potentiodynamic cathodic polarization techniques at 40°C.
In aerated solutions, the following reaction may occur:
Ni + H2O <-> NiO + 2W + 2e
from the values of corrosion potentials (Ecorr) it can be concluded that the behaviour of the investigated Ni alloy in acetic, tartaric and citric acid solutions under open circuit conditions corresponds mainly to Ni/NiO system. In oxalic acid solutions, the relatively high negative values of E.- can be ascribed to the porosity of the oxide film.
