Abstract

This study is a community-based study in which active surveillance of AVH was performed from March 1998 to August 2001 in Sallam Village, Assiut. The aim of the study was to identify the different etiologies of AVH in this communmity, to describe the clinical spectrum of presentation of AVH due to each hepatitis types and to study the incidence of AVH due to type C and E. The methods of active surveillance included house survey, hospital check records and annual serosurvey.
Our study included two groups (group I): 130 cases meeting the specified inclusion criteria for AVH. (group II): 54 cases of anti-HCV and anti-HEV IgG seroconverters. The studied patients were subjected to complete history, physical examination, abdominal ultrasonography, and urine examination for bilurbin and S. hematobium ova. Liver function tests and complete serological assayas for different types of viral hepatitis from A to E were performed.
Froup I: of the 130 cases (19, 14.6% cases) were excluded from our cases of AVH and were diagnosed as chronic HCV. In addition to (6.4% cases) had history of exposure to hepatotoxic medications or other potentially hepatotoxic substances. So the remaining 105 case were diagnosed as AVH.
