Abstract

The present study include a series of selected forty cases obtained from the
files of the pathology department of EL-Maddi Military Hospital and 6
normal liver biopsies used as a control.
2. The forty cases studied include I3 hepatitic cases, 16 benign nodular lesions
and I I cases ofH.C.C .
3. II&E sections or studied cases are reclassified according to the most recent
classifications and unstained sections are immunocytochemically stained
using KiMIP anti-CD68 monoclonal antibody.
4. The macrophages.immunohistochemical detection of the CD68 antigen In
Kupffer cells is an important tool to quantify both stable and migrating liver
macrophages .
5. The quantification ofKCs after staining with the anti-CD68 antibody KiMlp
was important to differentiate between:
A. Benign and Malignant hepatic lesions.
B. Dysplastic nodules from adenomatous nodules and focal nodular hyperplasia
6. KCs counts increased in chronic hepatitis in relation to normal control. With
increase hepatitis activity index, the KCs counts increased with a maximum in
the high activity index with fibrosis.
This finding emphasizes the role of KC in hepatic fibrinogenesis, through
activation of Ito cells and cytokine production.
7. The present study is the first up to our knowledge to report a significant
correlation between reduced survival and decrease KC counts in hepatocellular
carcinomas
8- The study must be extended to envolve metastatic tumors of the liver.
