Abstract

Cotton is one of the most important fiber crops of the world and is likely to enjoy this advantage in the future. In Egypt, cotton is important for both export and local textile industry. Also, its seeds give useful edible oil and feeding stuff for animals.
The improving of quantitative characters in cotton breeding programme specially lint yield, which is the ultimate goal of the plant breeder, is faced by great sum of difficulties as yield is a complex character and depends upon the action and interaction of number of factors.
from such an attribute, it was felt that the genetic progress would be considerably accelerated if simultaneous selection for several economic attributes contributing to it is considered. However, the relationships among cotton lint yield and its components are complex. The components are influenced by genetical and environmental variations and by the interaction between these two.
In their selection criteria for yield, breeders place more emphasis on some components than others, with the degree of importance varying among breeders.
