Abstract
Several problems may arise when foundations are laid on expensive clay soils. Examples are failure of constractions • danzo to roads. etc. In different regiots of the world. several Investigators recognined the engineering
properties and methods of design of structure for expensive
soils. The provisions which are carried out for expensive soils are different from one country another. because of the differences in type of structure. type of expansive soils,and other enviromental factors. Suggestaion for solving the problem of expensive soils are : replacement by inactive material, stabiligation and special structural
designs.
In Egypt, swelling clay soils are found in different 1ocations such as New-Valley. Aswan. Madinat-Nasr. Suez and Assiut.
these swelling soils caused many damges. However, little attention was given to the swelling soil studies until the last few years.
In this thesis the behavior of model of different types of foundations on expensive solis and the behaviour of the swelling soils under and surrounding the foundations were studied.
