Abstract

Drilling tests were cobnducted at the drilling Research Laboratory in the Institute of Petroleum Engineering at the Technical University of Clausthal Germany. A specially built research driolling machine (Single-Vutter) was used for the experimental work. The tests were carried out under normal atmospheric conditions using water as a drilling fluid.
Three tungsten carbiide cuitters of different diameters, BT10 (Dc=10 mm), BT10 (Dc=7.5mm), were used to drill dolomite, limestone, anhydrite, Bentheumer sandstone, Obernkirchener sandstone and granite. The cutting speed used varied between 0.5 and 2.0 m/s, also the weight on the bit ranged from 10 to 100 N/mm.
New bits were used to sdtudy the effect of the weight on them, on the cutting speed at specific depth of cut and on the specific energy. For this purpose loads on bit and variable speeds were experienced. The approximate weight on bit cutting speed which give maximum specific depth of cut and minimum specific energy were obtained for each individual rock. The obtained results were used to determune some relationships between the weight on bit versus specific depth of cut, specific energy and coupling factor.
Other relationships were also made between the cutting speed and the same parameters.
