Abstract

In this study the earth pressure distribution against rigid retaining wall resulting from different modes of wall movement are studied considering the stress-strain relationship of the soil is elastic-plastic. The finite element method had been utilized for the analysis. accordingly, full informations about the earth pressure distribution against the retaining wall are presented. Through the development of the procedure many important aspects in the earth pressure problems are clarified.
The effect of the soil properties on the required size of the backfill in the analysis is studied taking into account two consideration for the depth of the backfill. It is found that great difference exists in the earth pressure distribution against the retaining wall between these two considerations. The calculated earth pressure distributions considering the sufficient dimensions of the backfill are compared with the classical theories and it was found that there are considerable differences.
Full informations about the earth pressure distribution against the retaining wall for three kinds of modes of wall deflection (translation - rotation about wall toe- rotation about wall top) are presented. Determination of the plastic strain regions in the backfill behind the retaining wall for all cases are clarified. Also, atudy between the horizontal thrust and the wall displacement is performed. The computed results show that a very large wall displacement is required to reach a constant value for the horizontal thrust.
