Abstract

Cotton still ranks as a major source of national income of Egypt . The Egyptian economy is heavily dependant on cotton production . The present investigation was carried out at Faculty of Agriculture Farm, during 2002 growing season, Department of Agric. Mechanization, Faculty of Agriculture, Kafr El-Sheikh, Tanta University. The main objective of this investigation was to study the effect of different irrigation systems, irrigation intervals and some irrigation operations on cotton Giza 89 production under clay soil conditions . Three irrigation systems were used ( furrow, perforated pipes and drip irrigation ) . Three irrigation intervals were used ( 10 , 15 and 20 days for furrow and perforated pipes irrigation systems ), while in drip irrigation the intervals were ( 2 , 4 and 6 days ) and two types of irrigation operations were used ( every row and alternative irrigation with furrow and perforated pipes irrigation systems ), while in drip irrigation the irrigation operations were single and double of lateral lines . The obtained results may be presented and summarized as follows: * Soil moisture distribution and soil moisture content - The soil moisture content increases under and around the emitters . - The lowest values of soil moisture content were found in the mid-distance between both two emitters ( along laterals ) and two laterals ( across laterals ) in drip irrigation system. While under both furrow and perforated pipes systems the lowest values of soil moisture content were found in the end of furrow. - For different irrigation intervals there was an effect for all irrigation systems on water distribution pattern.
