Abstract - 136 - This study was conducted in urology department and statistic unit in Benha University Hospital in the period from 15/3/1981 to 15/9/1985. from the data collected it was found that, the total number of inpatients till 15/9/1985 was 1229 cases. Out of them 189 cases had renal disorders, 249 cases had ureteric disorders, 424 cases had bladder disorders, 176 cases had p,rostatic disorders and 191 cases had external genitalia disorders. from the 1229 inpatients 682 cases were operated upon representing 55.5% of total number of inpatients, 10.8% of cases were given medical treatment, 11.2% were unfit for operation, 14.3% were discharged to complete their investigations out and lost and 8.2% refused operation. AS REGARDS THE KIDNEY The number of inpatient s was 189 cases, out of them 84 cases (44.4%) of Cases (14.3%) were given medical treatment, 23 cases (12.2%) were unfit for operation, 40 cases (21.2%) were discharged to complete investigations out and lost and 15 cases (7.9%) refused operation. - 137 - Operations done on kidney were mainly (9l.6%) for stone{s) either alone (79.7%) or with peyloplasty{11.9%) All these operations were open operations (There were no percutaneous route or extrocrporal shock lithotripsy). We also found that: Kidney ope~ations were mostly done on patients aged from 30 to less than 50 years, male to female ratio was 3.7 : 1. There was no endoscopic operations on kidney. Most cases of kidney operations (53.6%) were stayed preoperatively for a period from 5 to less than 15 days and 40.4% of cases had stayed postoperatively for a period from 10 to less than 15 days. AS REGARDS THE URETER The total nwnber of inpatients was 249 cases out of them 100 cases (40.2%) were operated upon, 45 cases (18.l%) were medically treated, 29 cases (7.6%) were unfit for operation, 53 cases (21.3%) were discharged to complete their investigations out and lost and 22 cases (8.8%) refused operations. Operations done on the ureter were mainly (87%) for stone{s), either alone (7Q%) or associated with stricture - 1.38- (17%). Stricture ureter presented 30% of cases, 17% were associated with stone{s) and 13% were stricture per see We alsp found that: Ureter operations were mostly done on patients aged ( from 20 to less than 50 years and male to female ratio was 8.1 : 1. Endoscopic operations were done for 20% of cases (Dormia extraction of stone). Most cases (48%) had stayed preoperatively for a period less than 10 days and 63% of cases had stayed postoperatively for a period from 5 to less than 15 days. AS REGARDS THE BLADDER: The total number of inpatients was 424 cases out of them 290 cases (68.4%) were operated upon, 40 cases (9.4%) received medical treatment, 27 cases (6.4%) were unfit for operation, 42 cases (9.9%) were discharged to complete their investigations out and lost and 25 cases (5.9%) refused operation. Diagnostic cystoscopy represanted 42.1% of cases while operations for bilharzial complications (ulcer, cancer and bladder neck obstruction) represented 46.5%. - 139 - had stayed preoperatively in the hospital for a period less than 5 days and 53.8% of cases had stayed postoperatively for a period less than 5 days. AS REGARDS THE PROSTATE; The total number of inpatients was 179 cases out of them 71 cases (40.3%) were operated upon 9 cases (5.1%) were given medical treatment, 36 cases (20.5%) were unfit for operations (the higher percentage than in other organs), 40 cases (22.7%) were discharged to complete investigations and lost (the higher percentage than in other organs) and 20 cases (11.4%) refused operation (also the higher percentage than in other organs). Senile enlarged prostate presented 95.8% of prostatic disorders upon which operations were done. We also found that: Most cases were aged more than 50 years. Endoscopic operations represented 25.4% of cases. About 70.3% of cases had stayed for 20 days or more preoperatively and 35.2% of cases had stayed postoperatively for B. period from 10 to less than 15 days - 140 - and 22.5% of cases had stayed for 20 days or more (Higher percentage than in other organs). AS REGARDS THE EXTERNAL GENITALIA The total number of inpatient s was 191 cases out of them 137 cases (71.7%) were operated upon (Higher percentage than in other organs), 12 cases (6.3%) were medically treated, 21 cases (11%) were unfit for operations, 3 cases (1.6%) were discharged to complete their_investigations (Lesser percentage than in other organs). and 18 cases (9.4%) refused operation. Excision of tunica vaginalis, correction of hypospadias and stricture urethra and operations for inferility were the common operations in this period. Endoscopy was applied for 10, cases. Male to female ratio was 67.5 : 1. External genitalia operations were done with nearly the same incidence in age groups from birth to below 40 years. Most cases (51,l~ were stayed preoperatively for less than 5 days and 45.2% had stayed postoperatively less than 10 days. It is clear also from the study that there was a - 141 - markedincrease in the total numberof operations as well as increase in the numberof operations of individual organs. In studying a the outpatients numberin the department and the hospital it was found that a gradual increase in the numberin both the hospital and the department was evident. This also was true for the inpatients number. Fromthe study also it is clear that the bed turnover increased in the department reaching the double of that of the hospital by 1985 inspite of it was the half by 1981. |
