Abstract

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
The present thesis was devoted to study the pharmacological
action of the dry extract of ginseng powder ,
which has the upper hand in the fa~ east medicine especially
in China, Korea and Japan. It is used for the
treatment of anaemia, diabetes, gastritis, sexual impotance
and other conditions associated with old age •
In the present work, the effect of serial doses of
the dry extract on different isolated tissues from various
animals and the effect of the dry extract on the response
of these tissues to suitable agonists were carried out •
Moreover, the acute effect of the extract on blood glucose level
was studied in normal and experimentally-induced diabetic
mice •
It is evident from the present study that serial
doses of the extract from 0.5 ug/ml to 80 ug/ml did not
affect neither the normal contractions nor the epinephrineinduced
positive inotropic effect in both isolated frog’s
and rabbit’s heart. Also, the depressant effect of acetylcholine
did not change by concomitant administration of
ginseng extract
67
Doses of 20 , 40 and 80 ug/ml produced no effect on
the ileum and tracheal spiral strip of guinea pig and nonpregnant
rat uterus, also the contractions induced in
these preparations in response to acetylcholine was not
changed by combined administration of ginseng •
Epinephrine-induced contractions of rabbit’s
aortic strip; epinephrine-induced inhibitory effect on the
contractions of rabbit’s intestine did not by concomitant
administration of ginseng extract • The response of the
isolated toad’s rectus abdominis to acetylcholine did not
change by addition of the extract ( 10 to 80 ug / ml l.
The control was devoid of any change •
Lastly, the dry extract of ginseng in a dose of 0.4
mg/kg body weight, dissolved in 0.5 ml distilled water
did not produce significant change in the blood glucose
level of both normal albino mice and animals with
alloxan-induced diabetes .
from this study, it may be concluded that ginseng dry
extract powder has no side effects and the treatment with
ginseng requires a long-term period to achieve the
therapeutic effects .
