Abstract

This study was conducted at Mehallet Moussa Turkey Research Station,
Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, Ministry of Agriculture, during October 1991 to
January 1994. Two breeds of turkey were used in the present investigation, Broad Breasted Bronze (BBB) as an intermediate breed and White Nicholas (WN) as a heavy one. In addition to the base population. two generations were studied. selection for live bird specific gravity was performed at 32 and 16 weeks of age in the base population and the first generation, respectively.
The main results could be summarized as follows: 1- The genetic gain in the Hand L groups which were -0.009 and -0.005 could be due to 10\’i selection differential found in this experiment and for the low heritability estimates.
2- Heritability estimates for specific gravity at the age of selection (16 weeks)
ranged from 0.05 to 0.17 and from 0.01 to 0.33 from (Sire + dam) and (Sire)
components, respectively, in the first and the second generation which were
of low values as previously reported in chickens and ducks.
3- The realized heritability estimates from data of one generation of selection
for the selected trait ranged from 0.00 to 0.26 in BBB and from 0.02 to 0.04
inWN. 4- Specific gravity of the live bird in the second generation significantly
(P≤ 0.001) exceeded that of the first one in WN and the H group increased
more efficiently than the I and L groups.
5- The increases with this respect to the BBB genetic groups in the second
generation were non-significant.
