Abstract Recurrent pregnancy loss has always been a frusb’ating problem for both the patient and the physician. However, recent advances in tlle mdentan.ding of the palhophysiolO;gy of recurrent pregnamcy loss has diminished the number ofwtexplained losses (Coulam, 1986). The immane system msa complex integrated system that bas evolved to protect the individual Hom non-self tissue yet the maternal immune system does not normally react adversely to the conceptus. The embryo, fetus, and trophoblast are natura) immuno]vgica! targets due to their paternally inherited gene products and tissue S\l¢cific differentiation antigens. An lInmunologjcal etiology for habitual abortion has been proposed for many couples with an otherwise unexplained etiology for their reproductive failure (Hill 81Id Ravnikar. 1990). The production of autoantibodies dlirected against membrane phospbolipidls has been strongly associated with a variety of medical disoruers inclUding recurrent pregnancy 1M$, thromboembolic disease, and thrOtllbocytoperua (Branch et al., 1985). This antiphospholipid antibodies may be secoadary to autQimmune disorders (mainly systemic lupus erythematosus), but they have also been described in the absence of underlying disorders. |
