Abstract

Insulin like growth factor-l ( IGF-I ) is a single chain polypeptide (7.5 kilo
Dalton) produced mainly in the liver through the interaction of growth
hormone with growth hormone receptors in the liver (Ghahary et al., 1992)
. In the circulation, it binds to a series of six specific IGF -binding
proteins designated IGFBP-l to -6 (Mohan et al., 1989)
IGF-l has an anabolic, endocrine and autocrine action and is regulated
mainly by growth hormone and nutritional status (Ghahary et a\., 1992) Apart
from its mitogenic activitv ( IGF-I ) exerts anabolic actions on proteins,
carbohydrates and lipids (Underwood and vanwyk, 1992)
Hypogonadism is common in both alcohol- induced and non alcohol
induced liver cirrhosis manifested by small testes, low testosterone levels;
decreased libido ,impotence and infertility. (Wang et al .,1991 )
Primary hypogonadism indicates that the abnormality originates III the
testis; secondary hypogonadism indicates a defect at hypothalamus or pituitary
glands , resulting in decreased gonadotropins (LH and / or FSH) and
secondary impairment of testicular function.( Wang et al ., 1991 )
Liver cirrhosis is defined as a diffuse process characterized by fibrosis
and the conversion of normal architecture into a structurally abnormal nodules
” .The pattern may be classified as either micronodular or macronodular
