The area of desert in Egypt represents 96% of its gross area. This in the time where we find the majority of the population are living in narrow strip represents just 4% of the area of Egypt, however Sinai which has the area 6714km2 has occupied by only 0.4% of the total population of Egypt. Sinai has been considered, after its freedom, one of the most important regions in the country and an important axis for development. Policies has been suggested to fill its human vacancy, efforts have to be put together to pull and encourage active human forces to live in, develop, and defense. This work deals with youth hostels as an active factor to fulfill the former aims of the youth hostels.
This work consists of Three Chapters:
Chapter One: ”General characteristics of Sinai” studies the elements of development of Sinai which included physical, economical, social, and strategic ones (i.e., its special site and climate, economical elements, agricultural, tourism, mining, fishing and transportation wealth).
Other elements of development include the national and international willing and efforts to develop sinai since 1967 till now, the chapter ends by analyzing residential attraction in Sinai including youth hostels.
Chapter Two: ”The International Determinants to designing Youth Hostels” studies the regulations imposed by the International Union of Youth Hostels and its method of administration. An analytical study has been made to compare between same examples of Western and Wgyptian youth hostels, the study aims at reaching the ideal youth hostels. At the end the chapter, the principles of youth hostels in Sinai which aim at its comprehensive development have been stusied.
Chapter Three: ”The impact of Sinai Environment on the Design of Youth Hostels” studies the environmental effects of Sinai on the construction of youth hostels on its lands. This has been done, firstly, by studying the effect of site and geography of Sinai on choosing the situation of youth hostels, secondly by studing the climatology effects on youth hostels buildings, thirdly by studing the influence of local materials on the construction of youth hostels. The chapter ends by sitting the general consideration for establishing youth hostels on Sinai development axes.
finally, conclusion and recommendations have been given in order to make use of Youth Hostels as an element of development Sinai.
