Abstract - 182 - SUM MAR Y lhis study was carried out at Biochemistry Department, Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University, Benha Branch. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect on the iron balance in women using an TUD. This study included 3U parous and nulliparous women aged 18-43 years old, they were of the same socioeconomic standards. They were divided into two groups ”15 each • ~ •.. In both groups, Haemoglobin concentration, serum iron and total iron binding capacity were determined before inserttion of the intrauterine contraceptive device (Cu T 200 R and Cu 7) used as control •• The same biochemical parameters were also determined in both groups, 3 and 6 months after insertion of the device. Clinical and routine laboratory investigations were carried out for all cases of this study, abdominal and pelvic X-ray were also done. Haemoglobin concentration was determined according to the colorimetric method of Van Kampen, 1961. Serum iron was determined according to the colorimetric method of Trinder, 1956. ---- .. - - -~--- - 183 - Total iron binding capacity was determined according to the colorimetric method of Ramsay, 19S8. The data ahtained were tabulated, compared and statistically analysed. Concerning haemoglobin concentration, there was a significant decrease 3 months post insertion (p~O.OS), and very highly significant decrease 6 months post insertion (P-<O.OOOS) in women using Cu T 200 B... while in women using Cu 7, the haemoglobin showed highly significant decrease only 6 months post insertion (P<::O.OI)as ~ompared to preinsertion levels ’” Concerning serum iron levels, there was a significant decrease only 6 months post insertion (P~0.0125) in women using Cu T 200 B ..• While in women using Cu 7, the aerum iron ahowed no aignificant changes either 3 or 6 months post insertion, as compared to preinsertion levels .• Concerning total iron binding capacity, there was a significant increase 3 months post insertion ( P<O.OS), and no significant change after 6 months, in women using Cu T 200 8. While in women using Cu 7, the total iron binding capacity was significantly increased 3 months post insaetion (P < O.OS), and then showed significant decrease 6 months post insertion (p< O.OS). ------ ------------ -- - ---- - -’-------- ------ - - --- - ----- -- ---- - 184 - CONCLUSION AND RECOM~rNDATIONS from the present study, we can conclude the following important points :_ ¥ Significant chanoes in iron balance including haemoqlobin, serum iron and total iron bidning capacity were observed in women using copper JUDD ~ months post insertion. • These siqnificant biochemical chanqes were more marked and earlier with Cu T 200 B than with Cu 7 • further studies and more investiqations concerninq iron balance may be of value. For example : serum ferritin, transferrin saturation index and radioactive isotopic iron absorption. • Studies on Serum copper and aome other important trace elements (Ca, Mg, Zn) in women using ropper IUDs may be of value . • Much more number of cases, different types of IUDs and lonqer duration of follow up (l~ and 24 months post insertion) are needed and may be of value in future work. • Lastly, we recommend the need to monitor the iron status of women before and after insertion of IIJDperiodically, and the administration of oral iron supplementation therapy • -- ..- .._--- ----- ------ ----- |
