Abstract Biofilm is of increasing interest to clinical dermatologist in many practical fields. In the last few years, it was noticed that some infections resisted treatment with antibiotics. Patients who were responding to specific antibiotics no longer responded, also there was acute exacerbation on top of chronic disease. When blood culture was done it gave negative results, yet direct microscopic examination revealed the presence of different types of bacteria (Lewis, 2007). Biofilm is a community of bacteria or other single-cell organisms organized in slime occuring on surfaces as teeth, catheters and contact lenses. It is a predominant form of life for many microorganisms in a hydrated biologic system. The formation of these bacterial communities is well established in industerial and dental researches where biofilms are routinely studied and engineered. Biofilms are also a crucial concept in infection research following the use of medical prosthetics and endogenous devices as catheters, airway infections in cystic fibrosis, chronic wounds and sinus infection and endocarditis (Francolini et al., 2004) . |
