Abstract

101 cases of ovarian tumours were collected from cytopathology unit, department of obstet, and gynecology, An-Shams faculty of medicine, in the period between 1980-1982. This study contains the incidence of each type of ovarian tumours, its relation to the age, the parity and the symptomatology. It also compares the results obtained with those found in recent literature. Benign ovarian neoplasms were found to constitute 71.25 % of all ovarian neoplasms while malignant variants were found to account for 29.75 % of the whole neoplasms. It was found that the epithelial neoplasms are the most prevalent type as they accounted for 71.25 % of all ovarian neoplasms. This coincides to some exent with what was found in literature. Our study revealed that the commonest presenting symptoms were lower abdominal pain, distension, abdominal mass and abnormal uterine bleeding, also, the occurance of bilaterality is higher with malignant rather than with benign tumours.
